Open Angle Glaucoma
SLT is a new LASER TREATMENT for OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA that has been proven effective in decreasing intra
ocular pressure. By decreasing the intra ocular pressure, the laser effectively protects the patient
from progressive vision loss that can result from increased intra ocular pressure. Because the laser is
very safe, it can be performed with minimal risk. If the laser is successful, it can sometimes take the
place of the drops the patient would otherwise need to control their intra ocular pressure. This saves
the patient money. The laser is performed at SEECA in an exam room using a modified slit lamp (the piece
of equipment Dr. D uses to exam the eye on each visit.) The procedure takes about 10 minutes and is
typically painless. After the procedure, steroid drops are used for one week. There are no limitations
on activity after the laser. The week after the procedure, we re-check the eye and the intra ocular
pressure. The intra ocular pressure will determine if the procedure has been successful. If the intra
ocular pressure has been significantly lowered by the laser procedure, then it is possible that pressure
medications (drops) may be decreased or possibly stopped. The laser is not effective in all people, but
because it is so very safe, it makes logical sense to try this procedure in selected cases.
Summary of SLT
SLT Laser can decrease dependence on drop medications for glaucoma.
SLT Laser is very safe. SLT Laser is so safe, that it can be repeated if it is not effective the
first time or if it loses effectiveness over time.
SLT Laser is performed in the office without dilation and the person can drive themselves home after the procedure.
There are no limitations on activity after the procedure.
A steroid drop is used for one week to help with the healing.
SLT Laser may be an alternative to major surgery for patients with Glaucoma, uncontrolled with normal drops.
Glaucoma is a very serious eye condition that can cause blindness. Please keep all of your
appointments and follow all instructions for your medications as directed by Dr. D to preserve
your vision for life.
