Focal Grid Laser

An Overview
Laser surgery is often recommended for people with Diabetic Retinopathy. Laser surgery shrinks the abnormal new vessels and reduces swelling. It is usually performed in the office using only an anesthetic or numbing eye drop. Some people see the laser spots near the center of their vision following treatment, but these spots usually fade with time.

Potential Side Effects of laser surgery include:

  • Temporary blurred vision (few days to a few weeks)
  • Occasional mild loss of central or peripheral vision
  • Decreased night vision

The laser is performed at SEECA in an exam room using a modified slit lamp (the equipment Dr. D uses to examine the eyes on each visit.) The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and is typically painless. There are no limitations on activity after the laser procedure.

Two months after the procedure, the eye is re-examined and the intra-ocular pressure is documented. Multiple laser treatments over time are sometimes necessary for adeuate treatment and results.

Summary of focal grid laser:

  • Focal Grid Laser is very safe
  • The main goal of the focal laser is to decrease swelling and prevent worsening of swelling inside the eye.
  • Focal laser is performed in the office with dilation.
  • Multiple laser treatments over time are sometimes necessary.
  • Laser surgery is designed to stop the progression or worsening of the condition, NOT TO IMPROVE VISION.
  • Laser surgery is not always 100% effective.
  • There are no limitations on activity after the procedure.

Retinopathy is a very serious eye condition that can cause blindness. Please keep all of your appointments and follow all instructions from Dr. D. Let's work together to keep your vision good for life.
